The UK to Increase Fines for Taking Kids out of School during Summer

Many parents in the UK are tempted to take their children out of school during term time to avoid high-season rates for family holidays. However, this controversial trend will soon face stricter consequences as the UK plans to increase fines for such absences. According to a survey conducted by travel agent Flight Centre UK in 2022, 67% of parents admitted considering taking their children out of school to secure cheaper holidays.

Currently, parents in the UK can be fined between £60 and £2,500 for taking their kids out of school. Surprisingly, 36% of the surveyed parents said they would even factor the potential fine into their holiday costs if it meant saving money overall. However, starting from August 2024, the minimum fine will be raised to £80.

The rising costs of living have already stretched holidaymakers’ budgets, and the situation becomes even more challenging during school breaks. According to UK newspaper The Independent, a family of four flying from London to Geneva would pay over 16 times more when traveling during half-term compared to one week earlier.

While fines for taking kids out of school vary across different European countries, the consequences can be severe. In Austria, parents could face fines of €110 to €400 or even up to two weeks’ imprisonment for unauthorised absences exceeding three consecutive days. In France, parents who cannot justify their child’s absence or lie about it risk a fine of €135, while compromising a child’s education may result in two years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to €30,000. In Germany, fines range from €35 per day in Bremen to a possible total of €2,500 in Berlin.

Although rules on taking kids out of school vary, most countries have compulsory schooling from ages three to 16. In some cases, parents may apply for exemptions or seek permission from the school for short absences. However, repeated or unauthorised absences can lead to fines, imprisonment, or even expulsion from school.

As fines for absences in the UK increase, it is likely that fewer parents will risk taking their children on holiday during school time. While the desire to save money is understandable, it is essential to consider the impact on a child’s education and the potential legal consequences.
