New Train Line Proposed to Connect Popular Seaside Cities on Spain’s Costa del Sol
A group of engineers, railway experts, and regular commuters have come together with a proposal to extend the existing train line from Malaga to Fuengirola along the stunning Costa del Sol in Spain. The plan aims to connect Malaga and Marbella via the scenic Guadalhorce valley, making it easier for tourists to explore more of the sun-drenched coastline.
The main objective of this new rail system is to reduce travel times between the coastal resort cities to a maximum of 45-50 minutes, as opposed to the current reliance on ridesharing services. Additionally, the proposed route would provide convenient access to the Costa del Sol hospital and bus station, further enhancing connectivity for both locals and visitors.
Expanding the Reach
The group of railway experts has outlined several potential options for the route extension. These possibilities include passing through both inland and coastal destinations such as Mijas, Alhaurin de la Torre, Coin, Alhaurin el Grande, and even extending further to San Pedro Alcantara from Marbella. These en-route stops could serve as enjoyable day trip destinations, allowing travelers to explore the vibrant culture and natural beauty of these areas.
Mijas Costa, for example, offers a picturesque 12-kilometer stretch of beaches and popular tourist resorts like La Cala de Mijas, which was once a quaint fishing village. On the other hand, Mijas Pueblo lies 10 kilometers away in the Sierra del Mijas mountains, featuring charming white-washed houses adorned with colorful flowers.
Alhaurin el Grande, known for its larger-scale traditional white architecture, houses the Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación church which preserves the remnants of Gothic rib vaults from an ancient castle. Visitors can also enjoy tastings at a 120-year-old olive mill, adding to the cultural and gastronomic experiences offered along the proposed train line.
Benefits Beyond Tourism
The potential benefits of this new rail route extend beyond catering to the needs of tourists. Train driver Pablo Marín highlighted that the expansion «helps to structure the province in terms of population» and can address housing problems by offering more affordable options inland. The improved connectivity also promotes social integration for individuals residing in remote areas.
As the proposal gains traction, it holds the promise of transforming travel along the Costa del Sol, making it more convenient and enjoyable for both locals and visitors alike. With its breathtaking coastline and charming towns, this region of Spain is set to become even more accessible, further solidifying its status as a beloved destination for sun-seekers.
