The Best Airports in Europe: Recognizing Excellence, Innovation, and Sustainability
Europe’s airports often make headlines for the wrong reasons, from strikes to delays. However, the recently announced Best Airport Awards shed light on which flight hubs are leading the way in terms of efficiency, staff satisfaction, and eco-innovation. These prestigious awards, organized by the Airports Council International (ACI), recognized the outstanding achievements of airports across Europe in various categories.
The 34th edition of the awards took place in Istanbul and celebrated excellence in areas such as environmental performance, innovative approaches to sustainability, and overall operational efficiency. ACI represents over 500 airports in 55 countries, making these awards a significant recognition of the best airports in the region, from bustling hubs to smaller regional airports.
Eco-innovation Award: Toulon-Hyères Airport
One of the standout winners was Toulon-Hyères Airport in France, which received the eco-innovation award. This recognition is given to airports that demonstrate exceptional environmental performance and innovative approaches to environmental management. Toulon-Hyères Airport has achieved an impressive 92.5% reduction in direct CO2 emissions from 2018 to 2022, with a target of surpassing 99% by the end of 2024. The airport has also reached level 5 of ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation program, certifying its commitment to achieving a net-zero carbon balance for emissions under its control by 2050.
Goteborg Landvetter Airport in Sweden was also highly commended in the eco-innovation category for its notable sustainability efforts.
Best Airport Award Winners
The Best Airport Award is given in five categories based on airport size. In the under 5 million annual passengers category, Torino Airport in northern Italy emerged as the winner. The airport was praised for its proactive approach to securing new connectivity, which contributed to a significant post-pandemic traffic recovery. Furthermore, Torino Airport installed a photovoltaic plant last summer, fulfilling a substantial portion of its electricity needs.
In the 5 to 10 million passenger category, Malta International Airport took the top spot. The airport showcased a strong recovery from the pandemic, both in terms of traffic and financial performance. It was commended for its efficient operations, motivated team, and commitment to sustainability, excellence, and overall innovation.
London Luton Airport in the UK was awarded the Best Airport title in the 10 to 25 million passenger category. Despite facing a temporary passenger cap in 2023, the airport demonstrated resilience and maintained solid communication with staff and passengers during a major car park fire. London Luton Airport also prioritizes employee satisfaction and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, with infrastructure improvements and a focus on sustainability initiatives.
In the 25 to 40 million passenger category, Avinor Oslo Airport in Norway was recognized for its long-standing reputation for efficiency. The airport’s innovative baggage system, drone detection technology, and autonomous snow removal contribute to its outstanding operational performance.
Meanwhile, the top prize in the 40 million passengers or more category was shared by Istanbul Airport and Rome’s Fiumicino Airport. Istanbul Airport, one of the newest on the continent, received accolades for its investment in cutting-edge infrastructure, strong growth, and operational excellence. Sustainability is at the heart of Istanbul Airport’s strategy, including plans for a solar power plant to meet all its electricity requirements.
Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, on the other hand, secured the prestigious win for the third consecutive year. The airport has set an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030, further solidifying its commitment to sustainability and innovation.
These Best Airport Awards not only celebrate the achievements of European airports but also highlight the industry’s dedication to efficiency, sustainability, and improving the overall travel experience for passengers. As aviation continues to recover from the impact of the pandemic, these airports serve as shining examples of excellence in the industry.
